Blue Review: Martín Demichelis

Player Profile: Martín Demichelis

By Archie Barnett

The last Blue Review saw Aaron Leggott look into the past at Manchester City's youth academy player - now a QPR player - Nedum Onuoha's career. This week however will see us look very much at the present and will be a short profile on new defender, Martín Demichelis.

The Argentinean defender signed for City on September 1, moving from Atlético Madrid despite only being at the La Liga club for less than two months.

Below are some basic stats on Martín Demichelis:

Demichelis' career started at River Plate, making his first team debut on 2nd September 2001 against Estudiantes de La Plata. After a year in the first team, River Plate appointed Manuel Pellegrini as manager - which saw the side win the Argentine Primera Divison in 2003.

Demichelis then moved to Bayern Munich, making over 200 appearances for the Bundesliga club. His seven year spell - between 2003 and 2010 - saw Martín pick up valuable Champions League experience, which adds to the centre backs value.

During his time in Germany, Demichelis picked up four Bundesliga titles, as well as four German cups and two German League cups.

In 2010 Martín re-joined former and current manager Pellegrini at Malaga, where the pair managed to reach the quarter finals of the Champions League in the 2012/13 campaign.

His next club was Atlético Madrid - for who he signed on a free transfer. Despite never appearing for the La Liga club, Demichelis reunited with Pellegrini again for Manchester City.

It was evident that Demichelis was drafted in as cover for the injured Vincent Kompany - however the new signing has been hit with a knee injury that will keep him out of action for six weeks.

It is also clear though that Demichelis will be used for his wealth of Champions League experience - having been a finalist with Bayern Munich.

Below is a compilation a small compilation of the new Manchester City player:
