Match Reflection: Manchester City 2 - 2 Liverpool

Aguero saves City blushes but is it good enough?

By Aaron Leggott

Yesterday's draw at home to Liverpool was a result which has helped put title rivals Manchester United in a great position to steal the title away from us.

Obviously, anything is possible and as we saw last season, City are always capable of pushing United right until the end and hopefully we see some of the same form that won us the league last year.

Not good enough: Yesterday's draw see's us lose vital ground in title race

At the moment though, we are a long way off that level and the draw against Liverpool just proved it. In all honesty, Liverpool were unlucky to go away with just a point, and it was us who were indeed the fortunate ones.

A spectacular goal from Sergio Aguero helped save our blushes and keep the gap between us and United at nine points, but it is a difference that I really can't see us making up.

Match Preview: Manchester City vs Liverpool

City hope to put poor midweek result behind them

By Aaron Leggott

It hasn't been the best of weeks to be a Manchester City fan. After the departure of Mario Balotelli to his boyhood club left City with only three recognised strikers ahead of the trip to Loftus Road on Tuesday.

And to make matters worse, all three were unable to put any potential doubts to the back of City fans minds, as Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Carlos Tevez all failed to find the net.

With the game finishing 0-0, it was an extremely poor result with title rivals Manchester United winning the day after at home to Southampton, extending the gap at the top to seven points.

There is a good chance that City will go into this game 10 points behind United if the league leaders grab a win at Craven Cottage this evening and Roberto Mancini knows that there can't be many more slip ups if City are to retain the Premier League, and the Italian will be hoping his team can bounce back against Liverpool this weekend.

Match Report: City 2 - 2 Liverpool

City rescue point despite disappointing performance

By Aaron Leggott

It seems like Vincent Kompany and co. are so happy at the heroics performed against Queens Park Rangers, that they would like to perform it time and time again.

In fact, it only took a poor effort from Edin Dzeko five minutes from time to prevent another 3-2 scoreline in City's favour for the fourth game in succession, and complete another unlikely victory for Roberto Mancini's men at Anfield yesterday.

Mancini, who decided to stick with the 3-5-2 formation that worked so well for him during pre-season, was quite clearly caught out by a Liverpool side who were gunning for a victory against the Premier League champions in their first home game of the season.

And despite a dominant performance by the home side which saw goals from Martin Skrtel and Luis Suarez, they were unable to contain a City side, who pounced upon two unforgivable defensive mistakes at the heart of Liverpool's defence in the second half.

City vs Liverpool: Match Preview

Liverpool's luck set to run out

By Dave Walker

Roberto Mancini was dubbed ‘Uno Fortunato’ – ‘The Lucky One’ throughout his glittering playing and managerial career with the likes of Sampdoria, Lazio and Inter Milan.

It wasn’t intended to undermine his achievements with Serie A titles and Coppa Italia’s aplenty, it was just the Italian media’s way of saying he was somehow blessed with good fortune as well as outstanding ability.

City vs Liverpool: Match Report

By Tom Smart

Liverpool will go into the second leg of the Carling Cup Semi-Final 1-0 up, with the added incentive of home advantage going into the reverse fixture of this two legged affair.

City vs Liverpool: Match Report

Article written by Tom Smart

‘A job well done’ is what many City fans will have thought coming away from The Etihad Stadium after seeing a performance that at times seemed lethargic and in need of a burst of energy or fresh legs. Nevertheless the Blues were clinical in finishing opportunities that were created with the 3-0 scoreline slightly flattering the league leaders. The game showed little flashes of brilliance that ultimately engineered enough chances to see off a Liverpool side that in recent weeks has vastly improved in confidence after beating a revolutionised Newcastle side a couple of days before.

The Christmas period has been one that everyone connected with City will want to forget. After picking up just four points from a possible nine, it is a poor return and it has led pundits to believe that City are starting to crumble under the pressure.
