Match Preview: Newcastle United vs Manchester City

City divert attention to domestic cup action after Chelsea defeat

By Rebecca Halliwell

The fourth round of the Capital One Cup sees Manchester City travelling to St James’ Park.

Manchester City will want to win to make amends for their defeat to Chelsea at the weekend. Their away form seemed to be improving but a late goal from Fernando Torres saw City limited to four points out of a possible 15.

While the Capital One Cup won’t be on the top of Manuel Pellegrini’s must-win list, the Chilean will be expected to put out a good squad and prove the Blues depth.

Sergio Agüero, who has been on excellent form recently will probably be rested, giving Edin Džeko or Stevan Jovetić the opportunity to start a match.

Manchester City have won each of their last eight meetings with the Magpies and Yaya Toure has scored five goals against Newcastle, more than any other side and may start tomorrow.

Pablo Zabaleta has said that while Pellegrini believes that the Premier League and Champions League titles are ‘the most important to every team’, the F.A Cup and Capital One Cup are also important competitions and expects that the manager will want the team to put in a good performance against Newcastle.

Newcastle have had a mixed run of games having won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six. They also lost 4-0 to Manchester City in the clubs’ last meeting at the beginning of the season.

The Magpies were knocked out of the fourth round of the Capital One Cup last year by Manchester United and with no new injury worries, they will be looking to advance further into the competition than they did last year.

Alan Pardew believes that the Capital One Cup could present an opportunity for the club to win silverware, and so Newcastle will be expected to put out a very strong team.

Loïc Rémy is Newcastle’s top goal scorer this season and is expected to play tomorrow evening while Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is available for selection after returning from a suspension.

Below is a video from the last meeting between the sides

My Thoughts

I think that Pellegrini will start with Costel Pantilimon, as this was the case in the last match as well as the F.A Cup and last year’s Capital One Cup match against Aston Villa.

I think that Pellegrini will also start with Richards, Demichelis, Lescott and Kolarov. We may see Milner and Rodwell given the chance to play and I think that Pellegrini will start with Dzeko.

Prediction: Newcastle 1-3 City
